Turntables and a voice

The oldest setup splits two jobs: one voice, one pair of turntables. AllMusic called Eric B. & Rakim the premier DJ and MC team of rap’s golden age; DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince won the first Grammy for Best Rap Performance with “Parents Just Don’t Understand”. Gang Starr helped pioneer jazz rap, and Pete Rock & CL Smooth made “T.R.O.Y.” a requiem for a friend.

Two voices trading the mic

OutKast won Album of the Year and entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2025. UGK debuted at No. 1 with Underground Kingz in 2007, months before Pimp C died. Mobb Deep sold over three million records, Black Star named themselves after Marcus Garvey’s shipping line, Method Man & Redman starred in How High, and Run the Jewels gave their debut away free.

Brothers, best friends and the new school

Clipse are two brothers, Pusha T and Malice; “Chains & Whips” won them a first Grammy in 2026. Rae Sremmurd, brothers Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi, took “Black Beatles” to No. 1. Dead Prez met at Florida A&M, and City Girls broke out on Drake’s “In My Feelings”.

Unc & Phew, the family duo

Quavo and his nephew Takeoff of Migos recorded as Unc & Phew in 2022, after studying the great rap duos, they told Complex (Wikipedia). Their “Hotel Lobby” performance on A COLORS SHOW later became the Hotel Lobby trend; Takeoff was killed that November. The family story: Quavo and Takeoff: how they were related.
